SOLVING TWO-STEP EQUATIONS RIDDLE
A Fun & Self-Checking Way to Teach Two-Step Equations: Free Riddle Activity for Your Classroom
Teaching two-step equations can feel repetitive and for some students, intimidating. Whether you work with middle school learners, special education students, or anyone who needs extra support, you’ve probably heard the same question over and over again:
“Is this correct?”
As teachers, we love when students want to do well, but answering this question 30 times in one class period can wear down even the most patient educator!
That’s exactly why we created this FREE Two-Step Equation Riddle Activity! This activity is a self-checking, confidence-building practice tool your students will actually enjoy.
How the Riddle Activity Works
Students solve each two-step equation and match their answer to a letter.
Each letter fills in part of a riddle.
As they work, students instantly know whether they’re on the right track:
-
If their answer appears in the answer bank → ✔️ They’re correct.
-
If their answer does NOT appear → ❗They know they’ve made a mistake and can go back to check their steps.
This built-in feedback loop teaches students how to self-regulate, identify errors, and correct their own work!
MOST IMPORTANTLY,
It transforms your classroom from:
“Is this right? Is this right? Is this right?” into “Let me check my answer… oh, I see what I did wrong.”
